After arriving on the island shortly, Tom Nook will explain that the player must pay 5,000 miles for changing from a tent to a house for its move-in fees (but actually Tom Nook says alternately that it costs 49,800 bells, but it is not possible because the player does not have enough bells.) After you pay and complete the 5,000 mile fee, the Nook Miles app upgrades to Nook Miles+ (with more extra goals to get miles faster).

Nook Miles (たぬきマイレージ Tanuki Mairēji) are a type of currency in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that work similar to airline mileage programs in real life. Players earn Nook Miles from travel and participating in activities around the Deserted Island. Additionally, players can also get Nook Miles from completing tasks and stamp cards in the Nook Miles app section of the NookPhone. Since 500 Nook Miles can be redeemed for a 3,000 bells voucher in the Nook Stop, 1 Nook Mile is worth 6 bells.

One of the ways to earn Nook Miles is by using the Nook Stop. It will award the player daily with Nook Miles in the following amounts shown below. The Nook Stop will not be usable during renovation of the Resident Services building and plaza, and once the player comes in the to the newly-renovated plaza, the Nook Stop will say a message to the player about the upgrade and automatically award 500 Nook Miles to the player.

In addition to earning Nook Miles, completing stamp cards also unlocks title keywords for the player's passport.
