Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a simulation game for the Nintendo 3DS released on November 8, 2012. It is the fourth main installment in the Animal Crossing series released outside of Japan.

An open-ended game, New Leaf follows a player-controlled human living in a town populated with animals and performing various tasks, such as interacting with characters and collecting items. As is with all games in the Animal Crossing series, the game is synced to the system clock, which affects gameplay based on the current time and day. New Leaf sees the introduction of the player undertaking the role as mayor of the town, allowing for added freedom and customisation.

In November 2016, New Leaf received a free expansion titled Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo. It was first released on November 2, 2016. The update included new gameplay features and the inclusion of amiibo support.

Tom is a blue cat with a white-tipped tail and muzzle. His hands and feet are also tipped white. The insides of his ears are colored strawberry pink. He has slanted yellow eyes with round black pupils, and his eyelids, when visible, are colored a pale blue. In {{NH}}, he has subtle dark purple colored irises. He has a large gray mouth shaped like a sideways 3, and the white on his arms and legs comes up in a sharp zigzag pattern. His initial shirt was the BB Tee until it was changed to a black Bulldog Jacket in {{NH|nolink}}. He carries the Flame Umbrella on rainy days. He has a slight resemblance to [[Rosie]] and [[Moe]], two other [[cat]] villagers.

As a cranky villager, Tom will appear mature compared to other personality types. This will make him appear belittling and insensitive to other [[villagers]], including the [[player]]. Despite this, he will learn to confide in the player, considering them his only friend. He will enjoy the usual [[hobbies]], but for relaxation and peace rather than competition. He will find it difficult to socialize with [[peppy]] and [[normal]] villagers, who he will criticize when talking to other villagers. He will get along with [[lazy]] and [[snooty]] villagers, as well as other cranky villagers, who he will share deeper conversations with. He will, on occasion, annoy a normal villager, usually when being mean about something or someone. Tom will also appear very sharp tongued, and will sometimes call the [[player]] a brat.

Timmy and Tommy are raccoons (tanukis in the Japanese version). They are identical twins. They have brown fur with a dark brown mask-like surface that extends across their eye area. They basically look like smaller versions of [[Tom Nook]], Timmy is a bit taller than Tommy. Their clothes change when the stores expand.
According to [[Tom Nook]], the two can be distinguished by a mole on one of their hands.

At the [[Nookling Junction]], Timmy works on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and Tommy works on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; at [[T&T Mart]], Timmy works from 7 PM to 5 AM and Tommy works from 6 AM to 7 PM; and at [[Super T&T]] and [[T.I.Y.]], Timmy works from Friday to Sunday and Tommy works from Monday to Thursday. Prior to the construction of [[Nook's Cranny]], Timmy sells and buys items in the [[Resident Services]] tent while Tommy wanders the island carrying a {{I|Nook Inc. handheld pennant|NH|flag}} during the day and offers advice to the player when spoken to.

The day after the player pays off their first [[home loan]], Timmy tells them about his plan to build a store, and he gives them a list of [[material]]s to bring him. Once the store is built, Timmy and Tommy start working there.

Prior to its removal in version on the 2.0 Update, when the player scans Timmy or Tommy's [[amiibo]] and tries to invite them, they will say:

''Hello, this is Timmy. Ooooh, Player! How can I help you? What? I should go camping?! Well, I appreciate you wanting me to take a break, but I'm just too busy to go. Thank you for suggesting it, though. Hope to see you in the shop soon!''

''Tommy here! Oh, hi, Player! How can I help? Ohhhh, a visit to the campsite would be so much fun! But I'm super busy, so I don't think I can go... Thanks for the idea, though! I really do appreciate it!''
